Having to pay the bills ánd being an entrepreneur can be a frustrating thing. Especially when you're a Projector.
Looking around, I see a lot of Projectors struggling with building a successful business, and I was one of them.
In the first 7 years of being in business — working as a professional vocal coach — my business was barely profitable. I was working my *ss off, burned out a few times, and it left me bitter on several occasions.
One time, leading into my first burnout, I had this crazy idea to initiate a live concert where my students could perform for their family and friends.
What was I thinking?
I did it, but I barely survived, and it led to my sleeping and anxiety disorder and feeling exhausted all the time.
Although my students had the time of their lives, and their family and friends were grateful and pleasantly surprised by the whole concept, it wasn't worth it. For years after, I struggled with both my mental and physical health.
But hey, the show must go on.
I kept on making the same mistakes over and over again because I was living the life of a Generator, instead of being wise about my Projector energy. I always felt the pressure of being productive, and... making money.
Then again, I only discovered Human Design years after, so I was truly going blindfolded through life, not trusting my instincts and intuition.
Two years after this event, I hit rock bottom.
My anxiety levels rose to a maximum. I couldn't sleep for nights in a row, felt exhausted all the time, and I lost the courage to leave my house because everything felt overwhelming and unsafe.
I sought professional help, and that made all the difference in the world.
Although my psychologist and I didn't know about Human Design back then, he was very understanding and empathetic.
For the first time in my life, someone permitted me to be who I am, even if that meant that I would make other decisions than was expected from me.
It was all I needed to move forward, into a healthier lifestyle. That was the moment that I knocked over the first domino. It resulted in a chain reaction.
Today I am still reaping the fruits of overthrowing that domino. What I did then was an act of self-love and self-care: I chose my happiness instead of trying to please everyone else. It also brought me to discovering Human Design, with a little help from my grandmother.
Now that I know that I'm a Projector, it gave me a manual to be myself.
I now have a deeper understanding of who I am, how I am wired, and designed to be on this Earth. And I wish for you to get that understanding as well because it is so important to live your life authentically, especially when building a business and doing marketing.
I have to burst your bubble a little bit, though.
Projectors and paying bills easily is not something that happens overnight. We're not designed to work a 9 to 5 job. The way we're built, we don't have sustainable energy, so actually, we are not intended to work at all.
So, how can you build a profitable business, if you're not designed to work?
It is possible. But as a Projector, you'll have to be creative.
The way we learn business and marketing is primarily a way of Manifestors, and (Manifesting) Generators. We have learned that we have to initiate and go for what we want. We have learned that we can "make" life the way we want life to be. We have learned that as long as we work hard, anything is possible.
Yep, at least, that's the case for Manifestors (initiating, "making" life) and (Manifesting) Generators (work hard). None of these things apply to us, Projectors.
We're here to manage, guide, and direct others. We see the bigger picture. We can tap into the energy of others and see how they can live to their fullest potential.
But... we have to wait for an invitation. We can't initiate. We can't just go manifesting whatever ideas pop up into our heads. And we definitely cannot work, work, work, and then work some more.
When it comes to working, we can only sustain our energy for a little bit. It's wise to think of shorter spurts, instead of running marathons. And then rest. Rest a lot. And go to bed before you're tired. These are the conditions for a healthy Projector's life.
But also, waiting for the invitation (and recognition of our talents and gifts) means that we're waiting most of the time. We're not supposed to be productive all the time. We're not designed to "sell" the way we are taught.
Not following your Strategy (wait for the invitation) results in not getting any results when trying to attract customers.
And also, you have to listen to your Authority as well.
I have an Emotional — Solar Plexus Authority, which means that with every big decision (like: is this client right for me? Is this a project I should be working on?), I need to first ride the emotional wave before finding emotional clarity. This means that I need to sleep on it first.
In the world of marketing and sales, "sleeping on it" is something you don't want to hear from your customers, nor is it something you should do, according to conventional marketing. You have to move fast, and you have to make that sale before people even realize they said "yes" to something.
Being a Projector, building a profitable business takes time. And you will need several streams of income to be able to feel financially secure. Especially income streams that do not always need you to be there. Think of (semi-) passive income streams, so that you also can make some money while you're waiting for the next invitation, or need time to rest and recharge.
In my case — I'm now fully recovered from my anxiety disorder and burnouts — I can only work for 3 to 4 hours a day, preferably cut into blocks of 1,5 to 2 hours at a time. I have off days, where I need to take rest, and I also have good days, when I feel fully recharged and ready to go.
The problem with this is that because our Sacral center is not defined, it is a challenge for us, Projectors, to know when enough is enough. Most Projectors keep going until it's too late. It's a challenge for us to set healthy boundaries when it comes to working, being busy and productive because we feel the pressure to work all the time.
We are living on Planet Generator (66% of the world's population) which means that most of the time, we're living on borrowed energy, Sacral energy we absorb from the people around us. It's the recipe for disaster and burnout if you're not wise about your energy levels.
So, what can you do?
Learn the difference between your energy and the borrowed Sacral energy from others. To do so, you need to disconnect from other people's energy fields by having alone time, every day. You need to go to bed before you're tired.
Look into different possibilities when it comes to earning money. Look at options to make money without you having to be fully present.
You don't have to put yourself out there all the time. The best thing you can do is wait for an invitation. I know, it's hard to be that patient, but it'll be worth it, I promise.
That doesn't mean you have to sit back and do nothing. I know that it is going to be very hard for most of you. What you can do, while waiting, is focusing on what makes you happy, what brings you joy. Do that. And rest regularly.
When it comes to building your business, "focusing on what brings you joy" could be something like sharing your passion on social media, through blogging or writing e-mails. This way, you're still building your audience and enjoying it while you do it. That doesn't feel like work, so you're not investing that much energy.
Still, you will have to rest a lot.
Make a list of both "productive" things that bring you joy, and things that feel relaxing to you. In between sharing my passions with others, I like to go for walks in nature; I like to meditate and watching Netflix. So, which are the things you like and recharge your batteries?
The most challenging part of building a profitable business, for a Projector, is having faith. Trust that following your Strategy (wait for the invitation) and listening to your Authority, while doing things that bring you joy and help you relax and recharge, is enough.
Don't feel guilty about relaxing or doing nothing.
You have permission to do so. You must implement this into your life. It is the foundation from where you can build that profitable business, even though the people around you do not understand it.
Especially when you're surrounded by Generators with a lot of definition (defined centers, channels, and gates), it is a challenge to follow your path. It's just impossible for them, having that tremendous amount of sustainable energy to spend, to understand what it feels to be a Projector. Don't cave in; you don't need their permission to be who you truly are.
In my case, I needed a lot of encouragement from fellow-Projectors, and even from professionals, like therapists and coaches. Surround yourself with people who do understand you, so that you don't have to go through this alone. We need each other's support.
Either way, if you feel that you're not in the right place in your life, or if you feel bitter because you're giving so much without getting the results you need, then you're not aligned with your true Projector nature. In that case, you will need to take a step back and reflect: Am I following my Strategy? Am I listening to my Authority? Am I living the Projector life or someone else's life? Am I choosing my happiness, or am I pleasing others? Etc.
Anyhow, there's a lot more to say about this. There are a lot of factors into play when it comes to building a profitable business and having the energy for it.
